Directed by Susanne Bier and written by Bier and Anders Thomas Jensen, this Dogme 95 film deals with the tragic meeting of two couples…
Joachim and Cecile, young and newly engaged with a future full of possibilities, and Niels and Marie, a longtime married couple with three
children who are drifting along in their humdrum lives, that is, until a car accident changes everything for both couples.
The plot of this movie could easily have been turned into a soapy melodrama. Instead, Open Hearts is a movie about the complex emotions of
people thrown into a life-altering situation that leaves a devastating trail of emotional wreckage behind…far beyond the physical.
Mads plays the role of Niels, a doctor at the hospital where Joachim (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) is taken after the accident, and husband of Marie
(Paprika Steen) who was behind the wheel of the car that struck Joachim. Niels becomes the “rock” that Cecile (Sonja Richter) clings to as
she tries to cope with the paralysis of her fiancé and his withdrawal from her. Marie’s feelings of guilt for injuring Joachim place Niels
in the treacherous middle as he grapples with the physical attraction he has for Cecile.
You cry at what was, what is, and what could be…only to realize that life isn’t meant to be taken for granted. Open Hearts is a painful,
but honest exploration of how human beings deal with tragedy and the complexities of the human heart.
