This is another dark gem of a comedy from the genius imagination of Anders Thomas Jensen.(Adams Apples, Flickering Lights et al) Here - if perhaps not in his ‘prettiest’ role to date, then arguably one of his funniest - Mads plays the angst-ridden and socially inept Svend, a follicle-challenged butcher with a tendency to sweat profusely under pressure. Svend dreams of escaping the cold meat-cutting room of his supercilious boss and getting behind the counter of his very own Butcher’s shop. So he sets about making his dreams a reality by persuading Bjarne (Nikolaj Lie Kaas), his dispassionate, pot-smoking friend into the bargain with him.

After what is nothing short of a disastrous beginning to the odd couple’s new venture, a freak accident involving an electrician, a faulty freezer door and a sweaty, panicking Svend sets off a macabre chain of events. Soon customers are queuing out the door of new butcher’s shop, all waiting to get their hands on more of the delicious tasting cuts of meat. But just what is that unique flavour that makes Svend and Bjarne’s fillet steaks so irresistible?

Sharp witted, darkly comic and surreal in the style only Anders Thomas Jensen can deliver, ensures The Green Butchers is a highly entertaining and a must see comedy.
